One of a couple of coils of worn continuous track, from some variant of the US Sherman tank. The earliest continuous track was patented in 1846 as an aid for steam powered traction engines, and was used on gun carriages in the Crimean War. The propulsion system gained popularity at the turn of the century, particularly under the Caterpiller Tractor Company, and was swiftly adopted by armoured fighting vehicles alongside the invention of the tank in the First World War. Based on photographs, I believe this section to be from a late model Sherman, possibly even the M-50 ‘Super’ Sherman variant used by Israel from the 1950’s. The split-section, steel exterior plates don’t seem to appear on earlier models or in European theatres, but let me know if you’re a tank nerd and I’ve got that wrong. My friend Erik Christensen and I had an evening to kill so we ended up around the coast with our Photogrammetry gear scanning this awesome van that had been burnt. Huge credit goes to Erik for driving us out to the site and processing the high resolution data we captured. This scan was created with 2474 images (culled down from 3000+). The shoot was approached in two passes, with Erik taking on the polarised side of the shoot while I did the specular shoot. Shot with 50mm lenses and Godox AR400 strobes at night time.
