This Rad looking gas mask is one of my favourite pieces of survival equipment. There’s a good chance you recognize it as it’s especially iconic and appears in various media as a cool looking respirator, despite rarely being named. It’s been used by many different military and civilian organisations, not the least of which was British special forces, who used versions in both counter terrorist and “regular” operations overseas by both the SAS and SBS. This was modelled off of an Ex-police example that I own because I’m a massive nerd. As for the model itself, it uses mostly 2K maps, was Modelled in 3DSMax and baked in xnormal. I was pleasantly surprised at the effect a good cavity map had in PBR! Actually turned out fairly high poly, but a few LODS helped that in-engine. Bust mesh from Polycount wiki. (Thanks!) Its definitely a habit of mine to interrupt a profile with an architectural or angular structure, usually on the head. It always just seems nicely jarring. I’m surprised its taken me this long to model a devil, as it is pretty much all I used to draw as a teenager having come across the gothic oddites of Jacques Callot, Abrecht Dürer and Hieronymous Bosch. And Doré, of course. His devils aren’t as pleasantly animalistic as the other guys’, but there’s something about the way that he congregates and arranges them in his prints that I haven’t seen done anywhere else. There’s something in the way Doré renders his demon wings that’s completely beyond description. Photogrammetry Scan of an original specimen from Fossilogic (casting rights holder), in Pleasant Grove Utah. Scanned using a Nikon D850 with a 35mm prime and an Xrite color chart. Images were processed using Adobe Lightroom and calibrated to the color chart in ADOBE RGB colorspace. Scan was completed in Epic Games Reality Capture. Scan geometry was processed in Autodesk 3ds Max using the retopology modifier to get to an accurate polycount to be subdivided to as close to 100millon polys as possible. Max was also used to unwrap into UVW layouts. The resulting retopoed and UVw’d geo was re-imported into reality capture and base color info was reprojected. The resulting geometry was imported into Maxon Zbrush for clean-up and minor restoration. Mesh Maps were baked in Marmoset Toolbag 4. Those maps and the maps from the reality capture were imported into Adobe Substance Painter for the creation of PBR texture sets for Sketchfab, Unity/URP, and Unreal 3D Model is ready to download for free, this model contains 382952 polygons.
