“Novus Ordo Seclorum” is a Latin phrase found on the reverse side of the Great Seal of the United States. It translates to “A new order of (for) the ages”.
This phrase is laden with symbolism. It signifies the idea of a fresh beginning, a new era, or a revolutionary change. When the United States was founded, it represented a break from monarchical rule and an establishment of a democratic republic—a novel form of government at the time.
The use of Latin adds an air of classical wisdom and timelessness to the phrase. It conveys the notion that the American experiment in self-governance is not just a fleeting moment but a lasting endeavor meant to set an example for future generations.
In essence, it reflects the aspirations of the United States to create a government and society based on principles of liberty, equality, and justice, and to inspire and guide the world toward a new and enlightened order for generations to come.
