Pre-Columbian Maya bat god sculpture curated in the Museo Popol Vuh in Guatemala City- Catalogue no. 2005-0032. This sculpture dates to the Late Preclassic and could likely originates from the Copan area of Honduras, bordering Guatemala. The monument is tenoned and could have been used as ornamentation on a structure. The glyphic text on the head and back of the piece relate to the monument’s dedication and ownership. Bats were an important motif depicted in Maya art and glyphic text, and depending on the context, possibly represented a harbinger of death, sacrifice, or the underworld, and often shown representing a particular cultural group. From the 18th Dynasty onwards, mudbrick pyramids were used to mark the tombs of private individuals. These small structures were topped by a stone pyramidion. Many such pyramidia have survived, and most of them were found in Thebes (at Deir el-Medina) and Saqqara (the burial ground of the city of Memphis). They are typically decorated with solar motifs. On the front of this particular example, the deceased Ptahemwia is depicted standing in adoration. The hieroglyphic text is dedicated to Re-Horakhty and Osiris. Xiongnu-inspired Hunnic belt buckles for my project: The Legend of Oghuz Khan. The wolves on each buckle are shaped like clouds, symbolizing Oghuz’s sovereignty over the earth. In Hunnic and Turkic culture, the left or East is considered the superior cardinal direction; hence, a prince associated with the East would often be designated as heir to the khanate. As such, the horse, symbolizing the nomad, is placed on the East in contrast to the dragon that represents the Han, or non-bow wielding peoples. Nonetheless, both the horse and the dragon are shown to be powerless against the wolves that represent Hunnic superiority. Stylistically, the buckles emulate the classic look of Xiongnu and Hunnic jewelry: gold, granulated, with carnelians/agate stones, and cloud and predatory based motiffs. The belt is still a work in progress. The symbolic descriptions are not meant to be offensive. The principal motif is a tonsured abbot standing dressed in a cowl; his halo indicates that he is a saint, standing with his abbot’s staff in his left hand and a buring torch as his emblem in his right. The staff, baculus was carried as the symbol of the pastoral duty. There has been some despute to the identification to the person on the bench end, some say he cannot be identified while others have suggested the abbot to be St. Brendan, as his emblem in german documents is a burning torch, and St. brendan can be related back to Kirkjubø.
