I found this great model on sketchfab and wanted to give it a coat of paint! After searching out some reference images I was inspired by 17th and 18th-century ship living quarters and some of the art and maps that were placed within them. I textured in Substance Painter and did the UV unwrap in blender (I removed some faces and internal objects to save texture space). I started by searching out some reference images of Air Balloons, but whilst there are is great work out there I couldn’t find anything that I thought really matched the model well and that I liked. So I broadened the search to old sailing ships and found some examples of private quarters and the art contained within. However, it can easily be used for an Arch Viz scene or animation. It was built to be versatile, so can be used as a art gallery, office, museum or modern home etc… Many of the Arch Viz style buildings (free or paid for) you can download online are made with sketchup or Revit, these are excellent tools, but when the models are exported they can be split into hundreds or thousands of pieces which is not always practical for a game engine. And whilst they can be joined together again, I created this modern building that is low poly and easy to set up in a games engine. Most of the portals I have seen are either stone or metal, so I wanted to create a stylised wooden, rustic Portal with some wood paint dye that has faded edges. Something that you may find in a medieval fantasy or the witcher. I used blender to create the model and substance painter to texture it. Most of the model is texture painted, aside from the painting that I stencilled around the base and there are some wood fibres that are procedurally generated. I created a particle system in blender and use a vertex force to get them to rotate. Blender doesn’t have a built in way to export animated particles, so I found a script online that I ran in Blender to convert the particle system to an animated mesh.
