There are 4 regimental buttons going down the front of the jacket, however there is evidence that it is well worn due to general wear and tear of the garment and a button missing. There are 5 pockets lining the jacket, 2 on the breast and 2 on the hips, all secured with the same regimental buttons that are the same as the ones down the front. There is then one concealed welt pocket on the right-hand side along the belt line. There are 2 Cornwall badges on either side of the collar, decorated with a crown and bugle badge, along with either regimental button fastenings on either shoulder. His wife Arria stabbed herself, then passed the dagger to her husband, saying, ‘Paetus, it does not hurt’ - a celebrated example of virtue recounted by Latin authors.
To the right of Paetus, a cupid sitting astride a dog is a symbol of love and fidelity. This ambitious sculpture group was produced at the French Academy in Rome by the sculptors Jean-Baptiste Théodon then Pierre Lepautre; it was inspired by the great Roman sculptures of the 1650s.
