My take on a conceptual reboot of the mighty Mercedes Benz SLS AMG “Gullwing”. Had fun detailing the grille and headlights on this one. Aesthetic attempts to capture the allure of the original 300SL, with pronounced fender haunches… combined with pushing the current MB family design cues. A re-make of the classic BMW 2002, this future version is an electric, semi-autonomous vehicle. The “waterline” band is now where the sensors reside, and you won’t find any exhaust pipe! In terms of modeling, the overall model consists of 3 nurbs patches (roof, glass, and the body). My thought is that something went astray with the Thunderbird between 1963 and 1967. My 3D sketch is a proposal for a different aesthetic bridge between the lovely 1963 body style and the somewhat radical departure of 1967. This took 4 hours to do, completely done in 3D while immersed in VR using Gravity Sketch. I had 2D reference pictures in the scene, but all the ideation of the forms was done in 3D.
This is a non-traditional medium (skipping 2D) so I did a bunch of tweaking with post process effects to give it a more grainy textured paper/punchy colors/rendered look … minus the dabs of white gouache for highlights!
