Als Sistrum wird ein in der Realität metallenes Rasselinstrument bezeichnet, das hauptsächlich von Priesterinnen im Tempelkult eingesetzt wurde. Das damit erzeugte Geräusch sollte das Rauschen im Papyrusdickicht imitieren, in dem gut versteckt die Göttin Isis ihren Sohn Horus, die Inkarnation eines jeden Pharaos, großgezogen hat. Über einem säulenförmigen Griff ist meist der Kopf einer Göttin (Hathor oder Bat) dargestellt. Darüber befindet sich ein Klangkörper in Form entweder eines Bügels oder - wie hier - eines Tempeltores, in dem Stäbe mit beweglichen Metallplättchen steckten. Das Schwingen des Sistrums erzeugte den erwünschten, rasselnden Klang. Dieses Objekt, dessen Griff fehlt, ist nicht funktional einsetzbar. Statt aus Metall besteht es aus glasiertem Steatit und obwohl Metallstäbe eingesetzt waren, hätten keine Plättchen geschüttelt werden könne (H.B./C.E.L.)
