Sculpture by Auguste Rodin, made in 1889, terracotta, 20,2 x 36,5 x 27,5 cm depicting a female mythological figure, a Danaïd. According to Greek mythology, the Danaïds were banished to the underworld and the eternal task of filling a leaky vessel with water. The female figure is crouched in a pose that expresses despair in the face of this hopeless chore. The Danaïd was originally designated to be part of The Gates of Hell. The work was enlarged and cut in marble for the buyer Herman Frithiof Antell. Encouraged by the success, Rodin had further copies made in marble, bronze and other materials. The Bodhisattva is the central figure of Mahayana Buddhism. He has attained a high spiritual level but he differs his enlightenment to help other men on the spiritual path.
Here we see a representation of Guanyin (Avalokitesvara in Sanskrit), the bodhisattva of compassion. While in India, this bodhisattva is still depicted as a man, in regions further east of Asia he looks like an androgynous, even a woman. Unlike the soberly dressed Buddha, bodhisattvas often wear royal garments, ornaments, crowns and other jewels. This work shows a remarkable necklace enhanced with two entangled dragons.
The attitude represented is that of the “royal relaxation” (Maharaja-lilasana in sancrit).

In ancient Greek mythology Ethiopian princess Andromeda was bound to a rock amid the waves of the Red sea. Why? Her mother, Cassiopeia boasted that Andromeda is far more beautifull then all the nymphs of the sea! This angered the god Poseidon who sent a monster creature, Cetus (Ketos) to torment people of ancient Ethiopia. The beautifull princess was to be eaten by a sea moster to soothe the anger of the god! In the very last moment a hero - Perseus flew (on Hermes winged sandals) and saved the princess from the vile beast.
Here is where the official myth ends and my own artistic interpretation of it begins. When researching Andromeda, I could only find white, pale damsels in distress. Angered by this I wanted to depict Andromeda as a true African princess. I disliked the concept of a helpless damsel and decided to give her some character. I also wanted to portray Ketos as a bewildered sea dragon not an angry whale.
