Yeast cells are enclosed in by the plasma membrane, a lipid bilayer that plays multiple roles from the selective transport of molecules to a less well-known yet as crucial role in the integration and communication of information between the environment and the cell. The plasma membrane is itself surrounded by a cell wall, which provides the cell with both structural support and protection.
