Lorenzo, known as the Magnificent, was the unofficial head of state in Florence from 1469 to 1492. After surviving an attack in 1478 at Florence Cathedral by conspirators (who assassinated his brother Giuliano), supporters commissioned life-size wax images of Lorenzo in churches in thanksgiving for his survival. Verrocchio reportedly supervised the wax specialist Orsino Benintendi in making those sculptures.
This portrait, thought probably made later, may be based on the wax sculpture that was dressed in the clothes Lorenzo wore during the attack. This marble sculpture depicts a seated Molosser, an ancient breed of dog used for guarding homes and livestock, as well as in war.
This is one of a pair of marble Molossers in the Uffizi Gallery, in Florence, Italy, and was 3D scanned in association with a digitization project undertaken by Indiana University in cooperation with the Galleria degli Uffizi.
