Artist unknown. Florentine, probably after a model by Andrea del Verrocchio and Orsino Benintendi, ca. 1513/1520. Polychrome terracota. National gallery of Art, Washington. Samuel H. Kress Collection. Lorenzo, known as the Magnificent, was the unofficial head of state in Florence from 1469 to 1492. After surviving an attack in 1478 at Florence Cathedral by conspirators (who assassinated his brother Giuliano), supporters commissioned life-size wax images of Lorenzo in churches in thanksgiving for his survival. Verrocchio reportedly supervised the wax specialist Orsino Benintendi in making those sculptures. This portrait, thought probably made later, may be based on the wax sculpture that was dressed in the clothes Lorenzo wore during the attack. The Alaska Building is a 15 storey building in Seattle, Washington completed in 1904 to designs by St. Louis architects Eames and Young. At the time of its completion, it was the tallest building in the state of Washington—and remained so until 1910.
The building was the first steel frame building of any height in the Northwest and Seattle’s first skyscraper. It remained Seattle’s tallest building for ten years after it was built. It was designed using terra cotta and in a style inspired by the Beaux Arts.
