Model of a pear of the variety Abate Fetel. The long and club-shaped fruit reaches or exceeds 12 cm in length and 7 cm in diameter, making it one of the large to very large varieties. This pear is a chance seedling discovered in 1866 by the namesake Abbé Fétel near the commune of Chessy-les-Mines in the Rhône department of France and first described in 1886. This is a tribute to the 17th-century Dutch Golden Age / Baroque painter Johannes Vermeer (1632-1675) and his captivating painting, Girl with a Pearl Earring (1665).
The painting is a tronie of a girl wearing an exotic dress, an oriental turban, and an improbably large pearl earring. It has been in the collection of the Mauritshuis in The Hague since 1902.
Being faithful to the original painting while pushing depth beyond the 2D realm, I am interested to bring her to life, as if she is reading the audience’s reaction, wanting to comment but too shy to speak.
