The DDA40X is a 6,600 horsepower (4.92 megawatts) D-D diesel-electric built by the General Motors EMD division of La Grange, Illinois for the Union Pacific Railroad. Nicknamed “Centennials" because they were built around the 100th anniversary of the completion of the First Transcontinental Railroad, and “Big Jack", the DDA40X uses two diesel engine prime movers, each rated at 3,300 horsepower (2.46 megawatts). The DDA40X is the most powerful single-unit diesel-electric locomotive ever built, although more recent designs such as the GE AC6000CW and EMD SD90MAC have come close. It is the third most powerful internal-combustion locomotive ever built, exceeded only by the Russian Railways GT1 and Union Pacific GTEL gas turbine units and certain steam locomotives. Though it ended up a bit too polygon-heavy, I am still happy how this turned out. My main difficulty was to render out curvature maps for the rust and scratch effects in Substance painter, but Xnormal does a good enough job after some tweaking around in Substance Painter.
This is a model based off of Joe Petagno’s cover art for the 1986 album “Orgasmatron” by Motörhead. Petagno is the original artist behind Motörheads famous boar-like figurehead and the guy behind their album art. He has also created Led Zeppelins famous Icarus character and artwork for many other bands of different genres, even covers for sci-fi books.

It is one of my favorite album covers, and it captures what rock and metal should be, an fast and heavy rock and roll train coming out the speakers and through your brains.
It was a great expericence to finally see the band live at Hellfest 2015.

I had a job where I had to make a replica of the Heisler Locomotive train from back in the 1920’s, which was an innovative design for a train engine at the time. The engine was designed in a way to have the two cylinders both at a 45 degree angle from each other.
This train was to be built in Blender, and then transferred to the Unity game engine. I built the train in a low polygon fashion (50,000+ triangles), baked the bump map, and also rigged the wheels and transmission, to rotate with only the action of one bone.
For the materials, I created a material ID for the train, and pulled the model into Substance Painter to keep all of the textures in one full map, so that when you import the train to Unity, you will only have to worry about one batch of maps, rather than dealing with many more.
The client is developing an open source project called TimeWalk, here’s a link to his website.
