Xiongnu-inspired Hunnic belt buckles for my project: The Legend of Oghuz Khan. The wolves on each buckle are shaped like clouds, symbolizing Oghuz's sovereignty over the earth. In Hunnic and Turkic culture, the left or East is considered the superior cardinal direction; hence, a prince associated with the East would often be designated as heir to the khanate. As such, the horse, symbolizing the nomad, is placed on the East in contrast to the dragon that represents the Han, or non-bow wielding peoples. Nonetheless, both the horse and the dragon are shown to be powerless against the wolves that represent Hunnic superiority. Stylistically, the buckles emulate the classic look of Xiongnu and Hunnic jewelry: gold, granulated, with carnelians/agate stones, and cloud and predatory based motiffs. The belt is still a work in progress. The symbolic descriptions are not meant to be offensive. My first attempt at handpaint (well, months ago I did one with the mouse, but that doesn’t count :P), and I’m really really satisfied with the mood of the scene and the result :D It’s quite a change from my usual style.
It began as an approach to modeling in 3dsMax with the Master Sword, then with the shield… and I couldn’t resist, I had to make the scene. Textured and animated with Blender.

I’ve always had an afinity for masks, so I decided i’d make one. I had no real idea what it would be like, so i collected lots of different mask references of many different types and styles. In the end i was heavily inspired by the Majora’s Mask short film and decided to go down a wooden tribal route.
I started out in ZBrush and messed about with the design for a few days, eventually settling on what you see. I remeshed and exported that out to Max for a clean-up of some of the topology and to do the unwrapping (though i was lazy and didnt reduce the polys for most of it, ideally it would be lower poly but by the time my laziness on the matter had subsided I had already unwrapped it, so I decided to keep going)
I then took it into Substance Painter, baked down my high poly details and textured. I had played with having glowing eyes but in the end I have decided it looks best without that. I added the symbols to the back as a hasty afterthought, and only now do I notice that they are off center!
