Dish with Sgraffito Decoration, late 12th- early 13th century, now in the collection of the Minneapolis Institute of Art. From its description on artsmia.org: ‘Reportedly found at the ancient trading center of Bamiyan in present-day Afghanistan, this type of dish, with incised design (Sgraffito) and “splashed” with glazes intended to run freely during the firing process became popular in eastern Iran during the Samanid dynasty (819-1005CE). Produced slightly later, this example demonstrates both the precision and spontaneity with which the potter approached their craft. This model was scanned and produced with a research process that captures surface texture and specularity more accurately - the research is led by Michael Tetzlaff, Assistant Professor of Computer Science at the University of Wisconsin-Stout, as part of a research effort that began when Michael was a doctoral student in Computer Science at the University of Minnesota. The work is now supported by an NEH grant, and the grant team includes UW-Stout, Cultural Heritage Imaging, and Mia.

This is a 3D scan of a cockroach I bought on etsy. It’s part of a larger project where I combined 3D modeled assets with photogrammetry (see http://whatswrongwithwhite.tumblr.com/image/177884973392 ). I used a lot of custom photo equipment (macro lens, polarization filters, extension tubes and a 3D printed cockroach holder from shapeways). For cleanup I used blender (cleaning up holes, chopping up into body parts, modeling deatils). For the final material design and export Substance Painter did a great job.
