The medieval chess pieces from the Scottish island of Lewis are among our most popular collections. They give us fascinating insights into the international connections of western Scotland and the growing popularity of chess in medieval Europe.
The eleven chess pieces on display in the Museum of Scotland were part of a large hoard buried on Lewis. The hoard contained 93 gaming pieces in total, including at least four chess sets as well as pieces from other games. The chess pieces were probably made in the late 12th or early 13th century in Norway.

Model information: produced by Dr Hugo Anderson-Whymark, 2019. 4776 25 mp images. Canon EOS 750D with Canon 60mm macro lens. Low resolution: Each piece 75000 polygons with 1024x1024 pixel texture. Used 231 cross polarized photos and processed them in Agisoft Metashape. I sculpted the smooth parts of the model in Blender and then decimated the model in Agisoft and then manually optimized the lowpoly geometry in Blender. UV was also initially generated in Metashape and manually optimized in Blender. PBR maps were created in Substance Painter.

I snapped a bunch of photos of the giant rotating globe fashioned for NASA now displayed at EROS Data Center to make this map. The globe was commissioned by NASA to help familiarize early astronauts with what they would see from orbit. The globe is rotating slowly but it was still tricky trying to capture enough of the surface for Europe to be sure I’d be able to generate a relief map.
