Pontus, God of the Black Sea, is represented in the left, rising from the waves of the seа, looking up towards the goddess. With the right hand is leaning on a tree and with the left one on the prow of a ship. The piece was discovered in Constanta in 1962. The relief dated from the first half of the 2nd century A.D. The church was built by J. M. Wheeler of Ansonia, under the supervision of James Houghton, Patrick Keely’s son- in-law. The first stone was laid on September 16, 1889; and two years later, on Sunday, September 6, 1891, the cornerstone was put into place by Very Rev. James Hughes, V.G., acting for Bishop Lawrence McMahon, who was in Europe at the time. I used some old Doom concept drawings for reference and tried to addapt the sprite work into something more modern.
