This perennial species originates in the Himalayas. It forms dense clumps and has characteristic branched rhizomes, that spread below the ground. The roots and rhizomes contain up to 6% podophyllin. The plant is traditionally used as a strong purgative. It is also used for the treatment of warts and cancers, but it should not be used during pregnancy.
