Łódź ze stabilizatorem wa-ririk
No.: NMM/EM/154/A
Place of acquisition: Kiribati, Gilbert Islands
Dimensions: length 6.25 m, height 0.58 m
Origin: Donated by Mrs Valerie Fenwick, Blaxhall, Suffolk, the United Kingdom
Description: The 6.0 km2 coral Banaba Island lying on the Pacific Ocean has 280 inhabitants.
A boat wa-ririk allowed them to navigate among islands. The hull has a narrow keel, side planks have no waterproofing and are sewn together with cords according to the ancient method. It is also asymmetric – more bulgy from the outrigger side to compensate its resistance. Thanks to that the boat kept the course without a steering oar. Because of its speed it gained the name “flying proa”. This boat built in 1960s was named the Te Itel (frigate bird, as on the Kiribati flag). Its shallow draught let it slide over coral reefs. A single outrigger was always placed on the windward side.

A friend portraying a British ASC (Supply) Lance Corporal in the Suffolk Regiment. One cheveron upper left arm is for a Lance Corporal; appointed rank, one cheveron lower left is for 2 year’s service. Please correct me in the comments if I’ve got that wrong. Thanks!
The officers and men of the ASC – sometimes referred to in a joking, disparaging way as Ally Sloper’s Cavalry – were the unsung heroes of the British Army in the Great War. Soldiers can not fight without food, equipment and ammunition. They can not move without horses or vehicles. It was the ASC’s job to provide them. In the Great War, the vast majority of the supply, maintaining a vast army on many fronts, was supplied from Britain. Using horsed and motor vehicles, railways and waterways, the ASC performed prodigious feats of logistics and were one of the great strengths of organisation by which the war was won.

The Suffolk is a British breed of domestic sheep. It originated in the late eighteenth century in the area of Bury St. Edmunds in Suffolk, as a result of cross-breeding when Norfolk Horn ewes were put to improved Southdown rams. It is a polled, black-faced breed, and is raised primarily for its meat. Wikipedia
