Por muchos motivos, Hatshepsut es uno de los personajes más fascinantes del antiguo Egipto. Nieta, hija y esposa de faraones, no se conformó con el papel secundario que la sociedad reservaba a las mujeres, sino que asumió ella misma el gobierno de las Dos Tierras a la muerte de su marido, Tutmosis III, y durante la minoría de edad de Tutmosis IV.
Pero en vez de conformarse con la regencia, se hizo proclamar Faraón del Alto y el Bajo Egipto (la quinta de la dinastía XVIII), adoptando con inteligencia todos los tributos reales y ganándose la confianza del poderoso sacerdicio de Amón.
