Making tests to animate the dolphin kick movement, in order to later recreate freediving underwater scenes.
The model and armature were created in makehuman, and animated in blender using keyframes.
As the movement was irregular, I had to use “Smooth keys” operator in the f-curve editor, which gave pretty good results although it reduces the amplitude of the movements. A one-day project. I’ve had this idea for a mournful hand clasping a rose for a while, but it never felt complete. Adding the pendant and chain I felt really added the needed story to really bring the piece together.
Hand model was from MakeHuman, all else I modelled in Blender. Textures were done in Substance Painter, then brought back into Blender 2.79 for rendering using the Principled BSDF for most surfaces, except the topaz crystal heart, which was done with my own custom absorption glass shader.

Blender Workflow:
1. Import Louis’s model.
2. Retopologise the head (quick and dirty).
3. Import a standard makehuman suit.
4. Load in the original artwork as background image
5. massage the mesh till it matches the reference
6. Project primary UV from camera view
7. Secondary UV for baking
8. Hand paint touchups for the texture
