Typ starszy to „piec podłogowy”, w którym wypał odbywał się w czeluści ziemnej. W II poł. XIX w. rozpowszechnił się piec hoffmanowski, w którym wypał odbywał się w cyklu okrężnym. Piec – ceglana budowla na planie owalu, posiadał kilkanaście komór. W każdej z nich cegła znajdowała się w innej fazie wypału.
