After a long time of sitting unfinished, here he is! This guy has been collecting dust in my computer files for a while. He started as a class project, but I never felt I did the original concept art justice after the one week I had to work on him, so I decided to resculpt and finally get around to texturing him. I had to fix a lot of stuff as well as optimize him for him to be game ready! I’m very happy with how this guy turned out, and it was a good piece to practice all aspects of the pipeline since I did a lot of back and forth changes. I decided to go a bit more realistic and dirty than in the concept by adding grime, barnacles, mold, etc.

We were using Oculus (VR) and it was also going to be small in your field of view, so I knew I had to be efficient with my polygons.

Some of the things the Subject Matter Experts told me to do was to take off the netting, because there was no point… etc…, so I ended up adding little details for fun like the wash bucket and some tires on the sides to add flavor. Grime helps too, cause sea salt tends to just rust anything metal. For that most of the textures were from Quixel megascans that I had to paint a color-coded map, and then Photoshop out the artifacts and other nonsense. Add Weighted Normals from a Maxscript and there ya go. A fully kitted out shrimp boat for Unity!

Here’s my latest project, a Smith & Wesson 66-8 .357 Revolver. This has a good amount of parts to it, so to have everything bake out right I had to bake by mesh name. I learned two things - that baking by mesh name is case sensitive, and trying to use an .fbx before it’s fully exported just doesn’t work. It corrupts your exported file. Just so you know.
With the textures, I used a combination of materials and masks to mimic dirt, grime, and soot from repeated use. I had to make about 7 alphas for all the height details.
I had to adjust some materials so it’d read better as metal instead of stone, as well as adjusting the damage information and swapping out some normals that I wasn’t satisfied with. Time to call this model finished for now. I’ve been working on a game with my team (Cotton Cloud Productions) called The Chopping Block. It is a horror theme and we wanted to have some distinctive rooms within the level, I thought a creepy painting would help add to the spookiness of the game (especially since it will disappear and reappear in another room with creepy laughter). I created the model, UV’s, and texture art. This is one of my favorite pieces I’ve done so far.
