With the demolition of the Sixth Street Bridge (or Viaduct) in November of 2016, an iconic part of Los Angeles faded into history. The bridge has appeared in numerous films, television shows, music videos and video games since its opening in 1932. Hollywood films include Grease (1978), Repo Man (1984), Terminator 2 (1991), In Time (2011), and The Dark Knight Rises (2012) among others.

Clean, doesn’t look like brand new - it shows that it was used, but it is still fairly new and well kept. Wear and dirt is visible mainly through roughness variation.
Dirty, looks like it was forgotten. The fabric is worn, and has been torn on the edges. The colours are faded and metal parts are corroded and rusty. Most of the portals I have seen are either stone or metal, so I wanted to create a stylised wooden, rustic Portal with some wood paint dye that has faded edges. Something that you may find in a medieval fantasy or the witcher.
I used blender to create the model and substance painter to texture it.
Most of the model is texture painted, aside from the painting that I stencilled around the base and there are some wood fibres that are procedurally generated. I created a particle system in blender and use a vertex force to get them to rotate. Blender doesn’t have a built in way to export animated particles, so I found a script online that I ran in Blender to convert the particle system to an animated mesh.
