For my submission, I present MAT COP 21. COP 21 is inspired by the fictional character Eva from the pixar movie Wall-E. My artistic take on the challenge was to present a visual representation of the effects of climate change. Similar to the message conveyed in Wall-E my model expresses the juxtaposition of despair and hope for a ecologically sound future. The damage on the model symbolizes the negative impact on Earth but still holds hope in the form of the pod accepting the plant. I focused in on subtle details that are symbolic for these current issues such as: dented & bent metal, the burning lines ( Earth’s rising core temperatures), the cracked glass (depletion of the Ozone Layer) and, the black malice at the figure’s base (oil spills in our bodies of water). This is a 3D model of a reusable bamboo straw. In the sphere of environmentally conscious production, bamboo is a popular alternative to plastic, due to its fast growth and biodegradability. This model was created by Lara Wischert, current student at Maastricht University/ Media Studies - Digital Cultures.
The bamboo straw is part of the digital collection “21st century time capsule” and stands representative for the modern struggle for sustainability. The plastic straw has become the scapegoat for overconsumption. Even though we produce reusable alternatives, we cannot get plastic pollution under control. The media outcry about plastic straws hurting sea animals has made a great impact on current views on plastic straws. But most of the people who have been actively avoiding plastic straws, kept their efforts to this specific item only. All of the other single-use plastic items are still doing their damage.

Based on the Samurai fighting fish this sculpture is made from ceramic pollution absorbing NoxTek. Our relationship with our polluted oceans I see mirrored in this beautiful fish which is highly territorial and aggressive, attacking any other fish in its environs. For centuries we have spoken of ‘conquering nature’ forgetting we are a direct wonderful genetic chance response to it. But we are so connected to this biodiverse intricate ecosystem called Earth, that we are now experiencing the ramifications of our endless neglect and ‘growth’.
