Gunpowder was stored in barrels in a special gunpowder magazine. Just like wine, the barrels had to be turned regularly to avoid the gunpowder stuck together. When used in battle, only a few barrels would be transported to the gun batteries, and gunpowder would be transported to the guns in leather buckets, all for safety reasons, see volume 1 of the “Mémoires d’artillerie" by Surirey de Saint Remy (BnF). The gunpowder magazine is also surrounded by water and by wooden posts, as additional security measures.
