The cuffs on both of the sleeves are slightly worn and showing some evidence of wear. There are hook and eye fastenings up the back of the dress, which would have been easier to fasten by the woman on her own, possibly indicating that she didn’t have someone available to dress her. The dress overall is incredibly modest, which could simply be indicative of the time period, along with that of the status of the woman wearing it. There is potential for this dress to have belonged to a wet nurse who was employed by a wealthy family to feed the babies.
