Small shawabti (ushebti) figurine. This is a modern forgery manufactured in the 1920s in Luxor, Egypt. Purchased (1 of 3) in Luxor in 2002. According to the shop keeper, his grandfather and great grandfather produced them by making molds from real figurines. An ancient Egyptian standing figure of the god Bes from the Roman Period (30BC - 395AD) from the collection of Bolton Library and Museum Services. Bes is shown with legs apart, hands on hips and leonine mane and ears. On top of his head is a five plumed headdress.
The figurine was excavated by B.P. Grenfell at Oxyrhynchus and donated to the Bolton Library and Museum Services Collection by the Egypt Exploration Fund.
