The Panel of the Four Horses contains one of the most evocative works of paleolithic art. Carbon 14 dating of the charcoal in the paintings dates the panel at between 30,000 and 32,000 years BP. The panel is famous for its horses, however, it is a long and sophisticated compostion that uses subtle undulations in the rock wall as part of the compostion. Got together with a bunch of my buddies one morning and we all took tons of photos (1780) while another friend flew a drone over and around the arch to get the above photos (another 1739).
Here’s a screengrab that shows all the camera angles we captured, including the drone shots:
The arch is over 24 meters (80 feet) tall and it’s right in the middle of a high traffic intersection, so it presents many challenges, and I’m not even talking about all the trees around it.
It’s my first large-scale scan and I hit so many walls with getting it to come out well, largely because ZBrush has a 50 million polygon limit. Anyway, this is the first of many.
