Legend has it that the Kongming lanterns were named after the great Chinese strategist and philosopher, Zhuge Liang, who was also known as Kongming. According to the story, during a war, Zhuge Liang used these lanterns to send secret messages to his troops. He wrote the message on the lantern and released it into the sky, where it would float towards his army's campsite. This way, he could communicate with his troops without the enemy knowing. The villagers in the small mountain village were fascinated by the story of Kongming and his lanterns, and they decided to make their own. They made the lanterns out of rice paper, bamboo, and a small candle.
