Two Komainu #3 (Guardian Lions) from Shinto Shrine
A pair of stone lion-dogs often flank the sandō near the entrance to the shrine or the haiden. These komainu, as the statues are known, are guardian figures believed to protect the space around the kami from evil.
The ultimate origins of these lionlike figures probably extend back to ancient India or even Egypt, but the more immediate source would appear to be Chinese. Guardian lions and other divine beasts were probably imported from Tang China, along with Buddhism, via the Korean Peninsula, accounting for their alternate name, kōrai-inu, or Korean dogs.
Most komainu closely resemble the so-called Chinese lion-dog. Typically, one of the creatures is depicted with its mouth open and the other with its mouth closed. In Mary and Xane’s world, Xane Corp. owns a restaurant chain named “Mary’s“. Mary enjoys drinking from these cups, most likely due to their cuteness or them having her face on them. The cups used by the restaurant are inspired by both McDonald’s and the old Wendy’s design, the latter very obvious when looking at the cup’s lid.
This is the new version of the cup, modelled using Blender v3.12, using SVG (vector) versions of the lid’s design layers to give the cute Mary’s logo design smoother edges that more accurately resemble its intended appearance, compared to the old model’s “low-resolution” 3D logo. This is also my most accurate and detailed restaurant cup model, with almost every detail from the real disposable cups recreated.
