A ship from the ’90s Expanded Universe, the I7 Howlrunner was a small starfighter developed by Incom Corporation (the same manufacturers as the X-wing) for the Empire. Probably best-known from the Essential Guide to Vehicles and Vessels, I stayed pretty faithful to the design, but made a couple of angles slightly more exciting and a little less boxy.
Out-of-universe, the ship’s design is probably an homage to the Buck Rogers Thunderfighter, concepted by Ralph McQuarrie, who also worked on Star Wars’ fighters. I wanted to make sure my version felt Star Wars-y enough, so I textured it in an extremely similar to the style of the OT X-wings. I hope you enjoy this slightly obscure ship model! Howl’s Moving Castle is a 2004 Japanese animated fantasy film scripted and directed by Hayao Miyazaki. The film is based on the novel of the same name by British writer Diana Wynne Jones. The film was produced by Toshio Suzuki, animated by Studio Ghibli and distributed by Toho. Mamoru Hosoda, director of one episode and two movies from the Digimon series, was originally selected to direct but abruptly left the project, leaving the then-retired Miyazaki to take up the director’s role.
