The Soviet Vega space probe was a series of missions during the 1980s. Comprising two spacecraft, Vega 1 and Vega 2, these missions were conducted to study the planets Venus and Halley's Comet. Both spacecraft's primary objectives included studying Venus' atmosphere, surface, and magnetic field. Additionally, they released descent modules equipped with instruments designed to land on Venus and gather data from the planet's harsh environment. One of Vega's most notable achievements was its encounter with Halley's Comet in March 1986. These missions marked the first and only time that a spacecraft conducted a close flyby of a comet's nucleus, providing valuable insights into the composition and characteristics of comets. The presented item is a refracting telescope on a tall equatorial mount tripod. The tube is made of wood, the 8 cm diameter objective and the retractable eyepiece are fixed in brass rings at opposite ends of the tube. The spotting scope is attached to the declination axis, which ends in a spherical metal counterweight on the other side. The declination axis is movably attached to the hour-angle axis.
The telescope was of compact size and offered quick disassembly, making it a convenient portable instrument. It was brought to the Astronomical Observatory in Kraków in 1834 by Józef Łęski.
