Dish with Sgraffito Decoration, late 12th- early 13th century, now in the collection of the Minneapolis Institute of Art. From its description on artsmia.org: ‘Reportedly found at the ancient trading center of Bamiyan in present-day Afghanistan, this type of dish, with incised design (Sgraffito) and “splashed” with glazes intended to run freely during the firing process became popular in eastern Iran during the Samanid dynasty (819-1005CE). Produced slightly later, this example demonstrates both the precision and spontaneity with which the potter approached their craft. ‘This extraordinary ceremonial vessel, one of a group, was discovered in the Lopburi–Pa Sak basin in central Thailand. The oldest settlements in this region date back over three thousand years and have yielded several important Neolithic objects. While a few ceramic depictions of animals in Neolithic and Bronze Age Thailand are known, this water buffalo, which stands as the centerpiece of the group, exhibits an originality, creativity, and superb workmanship that has no comparison in early Thai ceramic art. It is also the largest pottery buffalo known from this period.’

This model was scanned and produced with a research process that captures surface texture and specularity more accurately - the research is led by Michael Tetzlaff, Assistant Professor of Computer Science at the University of Wisconsin-Stout, as part of a research effort that began when Michael was a doctoral student in Computer Science at the University of Minnesota. The work is now supported by an NEH grant, and the grant team includes UW-Stout, Cultural Heritage Imaging, and Mia.

To ensure colour accuracy the Raw Photography was profiled with X-Rite ColorChecker and a unique profile created for sRGB Colour Gamut in Lightroom. Scale bar has been used to ensure scale accuracy. Note there are 2 diffuse maps with this package. The first diffuse map texture is the original photography, the second map is called diffuse_3 and are delit for re-lighting so you have both options available to you. Sometimes delighting can cause artifacts.
