Le puits est enfermé dans le bastion de Saint André, couvert par une voûte pour résister à l’épreuve des boulets. Le puits est creusé dans le roc: diamètre de 5,85 m. et profondeur de 63 m. Pour accéder à l’eau un système déjà utilisé à l’époque romaine et au Moyen Age a été installé. Le même principe a été également mis en place dans tous les projets de Vauban. Le puits des forçats ou Roue d’écureuil ou cage à écureuil a été reconstitué. L’ensemble est composé d’une grande roue dans laquelle un homme en marchant à l’intérieur entraînait l’enroulement de la corde autour de l’axe permettant le relevage de deux seaux.
