El Saab 39 Gripen, designado JAS 39 Gripen por la Fuerza Aérea Sueca, es un caza polivalente ligero, monomotor, desarrollado en los años 1980 por el consorcio de empresas suecas IG-JAS, liderado por la compañía aeroespacial Saab. Su fin perseguía —y consiguió— equipar a la Fuerza Aérea de Suecia con un caza, un avión de ataque y un avión de reconocimiento aéreo, para sustituir a los Saab 37 Viggen y eventualmente, a los Saab 35 Draken y al entrenador SK 60. El aparato debía lograr un nivel de prestaciones similar al del F-16 estadounidense3 y los objetivos de diseño debían satisfacer el conjunto de requerimientos del gobierno sueco; pero con una manifiesta intención, desde su contratación, de ser un modelo para la exportación, bordeando o incluso infringiendo las estrictas leyes de exportación suecas para armamento. The Saab 37 Viggen is a Swedish single-seat, single-engine, short-medium range multirole fighter. Development work on the type was initiated at Saab in 1952 and, following the selection of a radical delta wing configuration, the resulting aircraft performed its first flight on 8 February 1967 and entered service in 1971. It was the first canard design and arguably the most modern/advanced combat aircraft in Europe at the tim, featuring an airborne digital central computer with integrated circuits for its avionics, the world’s first of its kind, automating and taking over tasks previously requiring a copilot.
