The XR3 is to escorts what GTi was for Golfs. It was the model to have. Altho the great looks, the pre facelift XR3 featured ford’s CHT 1.6 inline-4 and… well, it was anemic, to put it lightly. Both GM’s and VW’s enterings in the South American hothatch market, the VW Gol GTi and Chevrolet Astra GSi completely dominated the poor XR3. However, due to a partnership with VW of all things, the XR3i released the next year, featuring the facelifted parts and a 1.8 SPFI VW engine. However, even still, it wasn’t faster than the competition. The facelifted XR3 remains one of the few affordable hothatches in 2022. This model is based on the South American XR3.
