A warp-weighted loom is a vertical frame loom where the warp yarns are suspended and stretched by loom weights. The width of the frame defines the width of the woven fabric, which is wound on the top horizontal beam.
Around 1000, this weaving typically took place in sunken huts (Grübenhauser) which could be heated during winter. The problem with current reconstructions is that there is very little light in such a sunken hut while weaving is a precise activity that does require sufficient light. We have solved this somewhat by adding an open roof to make the smoke of the fire disappear but also to provide more incoming light.
