The lighthouse of the City of Chania on the island of Crete is the most recognizable part of the city and one of the oldest in the world. It is 21m high build on stone base and is located at the entrance of the Ancient harbour’s pier of The Fortress of Firkas.
Build by the Venetians at the end of the 16th century it was reconstructed by the Egyptians in the form of minaret during the Egyptian period around 1830-40.
During the Turkish Occupation, the lighthouse was abandoned.
The current lighthouse tower is mounted on a trapezoidal base which holds since the Venetian Era.
The tower is divided in three parts: an octagonal lower part, the middle part with sixteen sides, and the third part which is circular.
The lighthouse was leaning badly due to bombings during WWII and earthquakes but was renovated in 2005-6.
