Shatrunjaya is the foremost pilgrimage place for the Shvetambara sect of Jains, one of two historical branches of Jainism. Occupying a hill outside the town of Palitana in Gujarat state, this sacred site is where Rishabhadeva, the first Jina, is said to have preached; his son, Bharata, later established here places of worship and traditions of lay patronage.
